Half-gain terminology
Many screen makers reference a half-gain angle or cone: the off-axis point where measured brightness falls to half the on-axis value. Others publish a broader viewing-angle figure without identical wording. That is why 170° versus 180° does not necessarily represent a precise ten-degree real-world advantage.
Why seating layout matters
A narrow media room with centered seats can tolerate a more directional surface. A wide family room with side seating benefits from broad and uniform viewing behavior.
Gain and viewing cone are linked
High-gain surfaces often achieve additional on-axis brightness by redirecting light. Depending on the material, that can reduce brightness at wider angles. Evaluate the pair of specs together.
