The basic idea
A screen with gain above 1.0 redirects more light toward the measured viewing direction than a 1.0 reference. That can help maintain apparent brightness on large images. But because light is being redistributed rather than created, gain often interacts with viewing angle and uniformity.
Why “30% brighter” is too simplistic
It is tempting to treat 1.3 as a universal 30% brightness increase. Real rooms are not laboratory reference conditions. Projector calibration, screen angle, room reflections, seating position and measurement method all affect the result. Use gain as a comparative specification, not a guarantee.
1.3 gain and wide seating
Some 1.3-gain white materials still publish wide viewing angles. NothingProjector lists 170° for its matte-white screen; Akia lists 180° for its CineWhite UHD-B material. Cross-brand measurements may not use identical definitions, so do not compare one angle number in isolation.
When 1.3 gain is attractive
- Larger 100–120″ images where you want to preserve brightness.
- Rooms with controlled light where you do not need ALR behavior.
- Seating that remains within the screen’s useful viewing cone.
- Projectors that are adequate but not excessively bright for the chosen image size.
