Material first
Use matte white when you can control light and want broad, neutral reflection. Consider an ALR material specifically designed for your throw geometry when ambient light is a persistent problem.
Keep the surface flat
Steeper projection angles make waves easier to see as geometry errors. A fixed frame is a strong choice when the wall can remain dedicated; a properly tensioned retractable screen is the flexible alternative.
Match gain to the room
Higher gain can help on-axis brightness but can narrow useful viewing characteristics depending on the material. Balance screen gain with seating spread rather than chasing the largest number.
A relevant fixed-frame option
